Players explore a wooden island settlement while carrying fishing gear in How to Fish

How to Fish drops you on a tiny island with nothing but a fishing rod and an attitude problem. This beginner guide covers everything you need in your first hours: the core loop, your first cash, and how progression actually works.

The core loop: catch, kill, sell

Everything in How to Fish revolves around one loop that the Steam page sums up perfectly: fish fish → kill fish → sell fish.

  1. Hook a creature with your rod and lure.
  2. Finish it off with weapons or melee once it’s hooked — hooked creatures don’t die from the rod alone.
  3. Sell the meat for cash to buy better rods, lures, and guns.

It sounds simple, but every layer of the game hangs off this loop: quests ask you for specific catches, bosses are summoned with special lures, and money buys everything.

Your first cash (Island 1 — Lighthouse)

You start on Lighthouse Island with a Crab Fishing Rod. Do this first:

  1. Pick up clams from the ground and feed them to the Lighthouse Keeper — this is your first source of cash before you can afford lures.
  2. Catch Rock Crabs and Shrimp with the Free Lure. They’re cheap, but they’re a start.
  3. Buy Hot Dogs ($1) as bait for Lobster — better payout than crabs.
  4. Save up for beer ($12): drinking it gives you an Empty Beer Can, which is exactly what you need to summon your first boss (see below).

Trick shots multiply your money

Every kill has a hidden score multiplier. Headshots, one-shot kills, point-blank shots, no-scopes, quickscopes, 360 spins, last-bullet kills, and overkills all stack bonus money. Even if you’re bad at aiming, aiming for the head pays visibly more than body shots.

Once you unlock the grill later in the game, cooked fish sell for ×1.5 — another reason to always finish your combos.

Bosses gate your progression

Each island ends with a boss fight summoned using a special bait or lure:

4PufferfishDesertCarrot (Tourist quest reward)
5TunaRocksProfessional Boss Lure
6AlbatrossRocksPlace a caught Tuna on the ground
7Mutated Bowhead WhaleVolcanoThrow the Bowhead Whale carcass into the volcano

Watch the white bar under the boss health bar — that’s the escape timer. If it empties before you finish the job, the boss escapes and you’ll need to re-summon it.

The five islands, in order

Progression is strictly gated by quest and boss chains:

  1. Lighthouse — tutorial island, clams and crabs
  2. Forest — mackerel, pike, piranha; the Leech quest
  3. Desert — tropical fish; unlocks cooking via the Blue Shark quest
  4. Rocks — bigger fish, professional lures, the Albatross
  5. Volcano — endgame: scientific lures cost $500 each, and the final boss awaits

Our full island unlock order guide covers every quest chain in detail.

Play solo or co-op?

How to Fish supports 1–4 player online co-op, and the whole game is completable solo. Co-op makes bosses significantly easier — but as of launch week, some players report issues with the Create Session button. If hosting fails, see our multiplayer troubleshooting guide.

Known launch-week issues

The game launched August 20, 2026 and sold over one million copies in two days. That success came with some launch jank worth knowing about:

  • The Create Session button sometimes doesn’t respond when hosting co-op
  • Weapons can disappear after dying (especially the sniper rifle)
  • Some players find mid-game difficulty spikes rough — refunds exist, but the community consensus is that money-making gets much easier after Island 2

None of these have official patches yet; the developer (Dazed Games) has posted promising more content and bug fixes.
