Pufferfish Boss Guide — How to Fish Desert Island (Carrot Bait)

The Pufferfish is How to Fish’s fourth boss, fought on Desert Island — and it’s the first one that punishes you for standing still. It rolls at players like a wrecking ball.

How to get the Carrot bait

Unlike earlier bosses, there’s no purchasable lure for the Pufferfish. The Carrot is the reward of the Tourist quest, which itself requires catching a Needlefish with a Standard Lure on Desert Island.

1. Catch a Needlefish (Standard Lure, Desert waters).
2. Complete the Tourist quest turn-in.
3. Receive the Carrot.
4. Use the Carrot as bait to hook the Pufferfish.

The fight

• The Pufferfish’s signature move is a rolling charge — it balls up and trundles straight at you. Strafe sideways as it commits; it steers badly mid-roll.
• Between rolls it pauses to inflate. That pause is your damage window — unload headshots while it’s stationary.
• Same boss rules as always: white bar = escape timer. Don’t get greedy with trick-shot setups when the bar starts running low.

Drops

The Pufferfish drops the Pufferfish Fin and Pufferfish Tail, which feed the Desert Island quest chain on your way toward Rocks Island.

Loadout tips

Standard-tier weapons are fine. The fight is less about DPS checks and more about not getting flattened — patience between rolls wins faster than panic-firing during them.
